The Spirit of Islam

ONE of the slogans most characteristic of the present age is `the conquest of space.’ Means of communication have been developed which are far beyond the dreams of former generations; and these new means have set in motion a far more rapid and extensive transfer of good than ever before within the history of mankind. The result of this development is an economic inter-dependence of nations. No single nation or group can today afford to remain aloof from the rest of the world. Economic development has ceased to be local. Its character has become world-wide. It ignores, at least in its tendency, political boundaries and geographical distances. It carries with itself – and possibly this is even more important than the purely material side of the problem – the ever-increasing necessity of a transfer not only of merchandise but also of thoughts and cultural values. Interaction among Civilizations from an Islamic Perspective

Islam encourages dialogue and cooperation among civilizations with the ultimate goal of realizing peaceful co-existence and international security. It rejects all forms of conflict, bigotry, violence and terror for the mere fact that it is a religion that advocates mercy and amity among nations so that all peoples of different races and religions can attain security as far as their lives, property and beliefs are concerned. All that emanates from the salient truth that the Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has been sent to preach a message of mercy: “We have not sent you but as a mercy to all mankind.” [21:107] Read the rest of this entry »

Did Muhammad Lead a Violent Life?

Hundreds of millions of people all over the world believe in Islam. They come from extremely diverse backgrounds and represent virtually all the known races of humanity. Further, a great number of people, both men and women, convert to Islam regularly. That thousands and thousands of people embrace Islam each year from all around the world should be seen as a testament to the peace, serenity, simplicity, and beauty of the precepts and ideals of our Prophet Muhammad’s message. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) preached violence, and led a violent life, it does not stand to reason that so many people would continuously flock to Islam of their own free will.
